Empowering young people
Nikoli Edwards stands up for young people. In 2015 he was elected to the Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC), where he’s now Vice Chairperson of Policy, Advocacy & Projects. CYC is the officially recognised voice of the 1.2 Billion young people of the Commonwealth. And it’s the largest and most diverse youth-led organisation in the world.

On 11 May 2016, President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria, gave the keynote speech at Tackling Corruption Together, a major conference in London. Bolstering sport for development and peace
Dinesh Gajendran believes in the contribution of sport to transforming communities. Having grown up on a farm in India, he founded the Audacious Dreams Foundation, a grassroots, youth-led/-focused organisation. It uses sport for development and peace programmes to empower rural youth in India. Around 20,000 young Indians benefit from this foundation each year. So he and it fit naturally into the Commonwealth Youth Sport for Development and Peace (CYSDP) Network.
Innovating for youth development
Angelique Pouponneau, from the Seychelles, is the Vice-chairperson for Inclusion and Engagement of the Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC). As such, she is keen to solve a knotty problem: how to finance youth development. That was the theme of our 2017 Youth Leaders Forum in Kampala, Uganda – an important event, as it was an opportunity to influence discussions in the 9th Commonwealth Youth Ministers Meeting (9CYMM) that followed.
Supporting youth-led climate activism
Karuna Rana is from Mauritius, an island state in the Indian Ocean. It is one of the Commonwealth’s small and vulnerable members. Ms Rana and other young people from those countries understand better than anyone else on earth, the threat of global warming. They are the people who are witnessing its effects most directly.
